Chapter 33

A short time later, we were in Charlie’s truck, ready for our stakeout. We stopped and loaded up on food, and headed to Jo’s address in Cherry Creek. It was an even nicer neighborhood in the daylight.

We couldn’t drive into the parking garage without a resident or visitor’s pass. I took a walk and wandered into the garage to look for the car, while Charlie stayed in the truck, watching for signs of Jo or security guards that were bound to be on the lookout for people like me.

I turned the corner and my eyes locked onto the Audi. I wondered again what Jo was really up to. I bent down to tie my shoe, and slid a GPS tracker under the vehicle where it couldn’t be easily noticed or dislodged. The tracker could be activated remotely so when Jo scanned the car for devices each time she started it, which was likely part of her routine, it wouldn’t appear.

I wondered if Jo was inside right now. I dreaded seeing her again. My feelings for and about Jo were complicated. I had loved her, but now the line between her and the CIA was just too blurry. I did still find her unbelievably attractive, which would probably never change. She was like an addiction I couldn’t kick.

I looked around a little more, at first not noticing the storage lockers in front of most of the cars. With no one, or no cameras in sight, I popped the lock easily and left it hanging on the clasp as I peered into the locker and received a surprise. Inside, I found a bunch of sports equipment and frowned at the contents, looking deeper to make sure the locker was Jo’s. While her body was in amazing shape, the only physical things Jo enjoyed were sex and swimming. I poked through the locker and found an expensive mountain bike, golf clubs, a snowboard and a bunch of other things I couldn’t see Jo using.

I stared at the items for a few seconds, slowly realizing that everything looked familiar. I picked up a bike helmet and perched it on my head. A perfect fit. The gear was mine.

Several years ago, Jo had taken my sports addiction to a whole new level by showering me with the finest equipment her AmEx could buy. It wasn’t that I couldn’t have purchased these things myself, but the fact that she paid enough attention to my hobbies to know what to buy was impressive

I turned to the boxes, dreading what I would find. Inside were essentially the things I left behind when I “died.” Jo knew I was never coming back for them, and yet she didn’t get rid of any of it. I couldn’t believe that she kept the stuff, much less hauled it all the way to Denver. These were her memories of me.

I only made it through the first box when I heard tires squealing on the lower level, as a car took the tight turns.
